Reid Hoffman, the CEO of Linkedin.com was on CNN yesterday talking about LinkedIn and giving tips on how to use it. The interview lasted about 15 minutes and covered social network, professional networks, and job hunting.

Most impressively the CNN announced that LinkedIn currently has 36 million members around the world. That’s incredible if you consider a few months ago it only had 28 million members. How is this possible? Simple, LinkedIn has a new signup every single second.

The CEO says LinkedIn is perfect for finding information or to find a job. You can also post question on business strategy. For example, Mr. Hoffman asked on LinkedIn where he should open his European office. He got good tips like cities with multiple international flights.

To find a job he says “Applicants with complete profiles, recommendations and connections are getting highest response rates when applying for jobs. You can get an edge when finding a job by connecting to the hiring manager”.

  2. Incredible member growth!

  3. Recently, I attended the Fairchester Business Resourc (Darien, CT,where Jan Wallen, author of Mastering LinkedIn in 7 days or Less offered tips on how to use LinkedIn to find clients or jobs in record time

According to Jan, your LinkedIn profile functions like a sales and marketing piece and a personal web site. Her #1 & #2 tip:

    * Join LinkedIn – it’s free

    * Create a compelling profile that differentiates you from others

    Jan also advises:

    * Announce what you’re working on to your network and change this daily

    * Advise your network of your services (or job qualifications)

    * Write recommendations for those you trust, and request recommendations from those familiar with your work. Be sure they are results-oriented. Both parties must be members of LinkedIn

    * Use your headline to indicate how you can help

    * Customize your link by editing out what LinkedIn assigns you and substituting you name, all lower case, no spaces

    * Add the link to your LinkedIn Profile in your e-mail signature and business cards

    * Change your profile, and a notice goes out to your network

    * Search for people, jobs, answers or companies

    * Get introduced to people you want to meet if someone you know will introduce you

    * Answer a question and earn points if yours is judged the best answer

  4. The growth in linkedin members is unbelievable. Every week my network grows by thousands of people. The number of people looking for jobs is unfortunately growing but LinkedIn offers plenty of companies that are hiring.

Linkedin really helped me to build my professional career. I was really fortunate to found Linkedin through google search in 2003.
Eversince, I am more and more passionate and excited about the possibilites this incredible site can offer.

I am sure, Linkedin concept will create and nurture new generations of global entreprenures.

In this recessionary(I object, still using this commonly heard term)period, industry professionals can derive confidence from their network and should work to create jobs rather than hunting them.

    Thanks and Best regards

  6. That was a great video. Thanks for posting.

I always like to hear what the leaders say in first person what their value proposition is, without any filters.

Now I will also embed it in my blog post, ah, the wonders of viral marketing.

    :)

    Thanks again!

  7. Hoffman was also on Charlie Rose this week– the interview is definitely worth tracking down.

  11. My company is just thrilled that I’ve shown them how to take advantage of LinkedIn. If you use it as a “business card”, you don’t get much traction. But if you do as prior posters have said and use it to extend your reach, wow, it ROCKS!

Join the groups. Participate in meaningful exchanges. Ask questions. See who wants to meet for lunch.

My company is able to use LinkedIn not only for recruiting and seeking good candidates, but to connect with companies who might be interested our project skills.

    Who wouldn’t want that?!

  12. Hi,

I think too, this is great info and video! I will post this in my linkedin group.

  13. I enjoy linkedin, but I have some reservations over the longevity of the site, and also its’s intended purpose.

I work as a recruiter, but I also write to blogs and various e-magazines related to idtv.

The site is hugely useful to me, but there has to be some key restrictions in terms of how people use the site, for what purpose, its in its infancy still..

Like all good things, red tape will be the downfall, unless strategic planning is adopted quickly!

Contact me if you have any thoughts, always keen to discuss.

  14. I love Linkedin.com it truly is one of the single most important parts of my business. Check out my profile on there and if you have any questions or need any help with anything just let me know and Ill try to point you in the right direction. _A

  15. Great Interview.

Agree with some of the comments posted. Definitely, any social network forums would require self-regulation… in real life… meeting someone in a network social… there are things you do and things you don’t.

This also applies in cyber space… too much of self love and too little of “being true” would be the recipe for diaster.

Let’s us all be vigilant of this!

Let me know if you agree… or if you have noticed some of the “bad habits” circulating…we need to outreach and “self monitor” in a polite manner

    Johnson
