Your LinkedIn Profile Has Been Suspended

I tried to log in to my LinkedIn account as I do every day and to my surprise I read “Your LinkedIn Profile Has Been Suspended”.  Oh my god!

My account, my contacts, my groups, my business and my marketing are all suspended.  Yes, I do a lot of business on LinkedIn and use it every single day. How what?  What happened? Did I do something wrong? Can this happen to you? YES!

Immediately I visited the FAQ in LinkedIn and under “suspended accounts” I read every single question and answer.  No, I did not send unrequested emails or invitations, no, I did not spam, no, I did not do anything wrong.  What happened?

After reading the FAQ portion I quickly submitted an email through the web form in the suspended account section of the professional social network.  I waited 2 days and nothing.  No account and no response.  Now I visited the social network again and read all pertinent information I could find.  Finally, I found a customer service email.  I quickly send an email explaining my situation and asking for clarification, an explanation or any response.  Even apologizing for whatever unintentionally I could have done to merit a suspended account.

Next day I received a response and my account was activated.   What happened? 

New Rule!  You may only use the “First Name” and “Last Name” section of your LinkedIn profile for your first name and last name.  You can’t add anything else.  What does this mean?  Well, as a marketing tool I wrote clever messages after my last name on my profile. This is a marketing headline strategy to get more attention, more click-troughs and more exposure.  This is what I had:

When you do a search on the site for “beverage”, or “book” my name always came up. Furthermore when someone invited me to join their network or just browned my name they would know I just published a beverage book.  I did this by simply going into my profile and writing the text after my last name.  Now LinkedIn does not permit any messages at all; just your name. 

How can this affect you? Simple, you can’t use this strategy anymore. It also affects “open networkers”, the people who accept all invitations and want to expand their network as they can’t announce they are open networkers anymore. May people belong to groups like LION or TopLinked and other groups of open networkers who require you write their name after you last name; you can’t do it anymore.  Many more of you might write your email after your name to invite people to network, remove it.  These are some of the common uses of your profile name that are being cracked down:

LinkedIn has a new feature on the Group section, it is a job board. This is a great idea as many people are using the Group Discussion as a job board and many group administrators don’t like it. Many administrators even posted a dedicated discussion thread for jobs, many times entitled “Post Your Jobs Here”.

As of today, you can’t see the job board inside groups by simply looking at a list of groups; this is probably a bug. You actually have to click something within the groups such as news, discussion, or any other link. After you click any link you will see Jobs as part of the main menu within the post.

This new feature will complement the general Job feature that you see at the top of LinkedIn as one of their main menu items together with People, Answers, and Companies. The difference is that the Group Jobs are free to post, so you’ll see many more jobs there than in the general job posting.

What to do if you are looking for a job? Join all the groups that you can, LinkedIn allows you to join 50. Join the groups that relate to your industry or job expertise and also join any groups of HR or Recruiting professional so you can network with them. Finally, join groups in your city or area. For example, I live in San Diego, California and there are more than 10 groups dedicated to San Diegans.

Once you join all the groups go to the job posting part of the groups and start scanning for jobs. Contact the person that posted the job directly and strike a conversation or relationship. Don’t just send resumes to everyone, otherwise you are missing the point of networking. Remember, the power of LinkedIn lies in the people, the relationships you can establish and how you use these relationships.

If you have not already, make sure you profile is complete with photo, job history, education, skills, etc. This way the recruiters of HR managers can check you out before giving you a call.

It’s amazing that I came across this post. Being new to Linked In, I too wanted to begin making professional and reputable contacts, but my sixth sense was telling me that sending out invites to the unknown masses was not the best way to go. I am in the beggining stages of researching and preparing to begin my consulting career and this has just confirmed that I am going to continue to work hard at gaining reliable contacts!

I recently started using LinkedIn.com, a professional social network. For the first few months I just joined and had my 20 contacts, then 40, then 50 and got stuck at 50 contacts. Most of these contacts I uploaded myself.

I didn’t really understand the power of LinkedIn or what the big deal was. After all, you can’t invite people you don’t know. You can only invite your contacts and try to make contacts with people they know. For example, if you are looking for a job and one of your contacts knows the hiring manager at the place you want to work, you can ask your contact for an introduction. That’s very helpful but I’m an entrepreneur, I haven’t been an employee in many years.

Here I sat on my LinkedIn account with no activity. No new contacts and no activity. Then we decided we were going to look for Venture Capital for our new age beverage business, Liquid Brands Management, and for some reason I went to LinkedIn and typed in “Venture Capital” in the search box. Wow! I got more than 500 connections. How can this be? I only have 50 people in my network. Well, turns out that one of my connections knows one venture capitalist. And that one person has a decent network of venture capitalists, and those people know more people, so now I had access to all these new people.

Now I could see the real power of LinkedIn. The problem was I could not ask one person to introduce me to 500 people. I needed to learn how to grow my network, how to have people in my network, how to be connected directly with everyone. I found out how to do that and more! I also added people to my mailing lists, people that asked to be part of my list that came from LinkedIn. Wow, I was able to do this after only a few weeks…

Here are 4 Quick Steps to Supercharging Your LinkedIn Network.

1: Be an Open Networker
An Open Networker accepts invitations and wants to grow their network. They accept invitations to connect from anyone. This sounds very simple but it is not. Many people are still afraid of networking online. This defeats the purpose of growing your LinkedIn network. To be an open networker make sure you:
-Complete your profile and add your photo, websites, interests and business experience
-List your email in your profile as this will allow people to invite you to their network
-Write “Open Networker - All Invites Welcome” so people are not afraid of adding you to their contacts

2: Join the Open Network Group on LinkedIn

3: Join 50 Groups
-LinkedIn allows you to join 50 different groups
-Each group can have hundreds or thousands of users

-You make it easier for more people to find you and invite you to connect

4: Ask Questions
